More Repercussions From N. Korean Blast

Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, May 27, 2009

TOKYO, May 27 — Diplomatic aftershocks from North Korea’s latest nuclear test are jangling nerves and changing policies across northeast Asia.

Affronted by Monday’s test, South Korea announced Tuesday that it will join a U.S.-led effort to intercept suspicious ships at sea in an effort to stop countries such as North Korea from exporting missiles and weapons of mass destruction.

The North fired three more short-range missiles off its east coast on Tuesday, said Yonhap, the South Korean news agency. After its underground test Monday, North Korea had fired three missiles into the same waters.

And U.S. spy satellites have detected signs that North Korea has restarted its nuclear plant, a South Korean newspaper reported Wednesday. Chosun Ilbo cited an unnamed South Korean government source as saying that steam has been detected from a reprocessing facility at North Korea’s Yongbyon plant.

“Our army and people are fully ready for battle . . . against any reckless U.S. attempt for a pre-emptive attack,” the North’s news agency said Tuesday.

In Washington, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke to her Russian counterpart as part of an effort to seek a united response with “consequences” for North Korea. But U.S. officials also stressed that they are still eager for North Korea to return to multilateral disarmament talks and are not ready to declare the multi-year effort to end North Korea’s nuclear program a failure.

“We feel the door does still remain open, that we’re ready to engage,” said State Department spokesman Ian Kelly. He described the Obama administration’s effort now as trying to “bring international pressure to bear to get them to reverse their course.”

In Tokyo, a former defense minister and ruling party lawmaker said Japan should consider developing the ability to conduct preemptive strikes against North Korea, even though Japan’s constitution prohibits it from taking offensive military action.

North Korea is thought to possess more than 200 mid-range Nodong missiles that can strike nearly any part of Japan. The Japanese government, which has invested billions of dollars in a U.S.-made antimissile defense system, is concerned that the North is making progress in designing nuclear warheads that could fit atop its missiles.

“We must look at active missile defense such as attacking an enemy’s territory and bases,” the former defense minister, Gen Nakatani, said at a meeting of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

In China, where condemnation of the North’s nuclear test was surprisingly swift and unambiguous, the state media on Tuesday printed strong reprimands of North Korea from other countries. The shower of criticism was far different from the reaction to North Korea’s first nuclear test in 2006, when the Chinese media blamed the United States for provoking Pyongyang by cutting off aid.

“This may well be a reflection of Beijing’s frustrations for not being able to assert control and influence over North Korea,” said Wenran Jiang, research chair of the China Institute at the University of Alberta.

China remains North Korea’s closest ally and principal economic patron. But Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said she was confident that China would support a tough response. “I do believe that China understands the gravity of this situation and are prepared to work constructively with us and others to send a very strong message to North Korea,” she told CNN.

South Korea had long resisted U.S. pressure to join the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), which was created in 2003 by President George W. Bush and includes more than 90 countries that have agreed to stop and inspect suspicious cargo on sea and land.

Seoul was reluctant to rile North Korea, which repeatedly said it would regard the South’s participation in the effort as a “declaration of war.” But North Korea’s second nuclear test nudged Seoul Korea to change its policy.

North Korea has long been suspected of shipping or flying missiles to customers in the Middle East and South Asia.

As a member of the security initiative, South Korea is likely to receive intelligence information from the United States, Japan and other countries about ships leaving North Korean ports that may be carrying such goods, a government official said in Tokyo.

Joining the international interdiction effort “is a natural obligation for a mature country,” said South Korea’s foreign minister, Yu Myung-hwan. Even before Monday’s nuclear test, peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula had been sorely tested this spring. The North launched a long-range missile, detained a South Korean citizen, kicked out U.N. nuclear inspectors, restarted a plutonium factory and halted the six-nation negotiations on its nuclear program.

“Inter-Korean relations have hit rock bottom,” said Yun Duk-min, professor of international politics at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security, a government think tank in Seoul. “So it is the right thing to join PSI, even if North Korea reacts with resistance.”

Staff writers Glenn Kessler in Washington, Colum Lynch at the United Nations and Ariana Eunjung Cha in Beijing and special correspondents Stella Kim in Seoul and Akiko Yamamoto in Tokyo contributed to this report.

The news has recently reported that China and Brazil are looking to trade with each other, without using the current Global US Dollar.

Why does this make me think this is a sign that the “End of the Age” is drawing closer?  Because the Bible makes no mention of the United States as a great global power, in the End Days.

The Bible makes no mention of a great world power coming from the West to either fight against Israel in the End Times Great War called Armageddon, nor does it make mention of a great power in the West ruling the World or having a ‘voice’ in the World’s affairs.

I believe the start of the world looking to trade in currencies other than the current Global US Dollar, is yet another sign that the United States of America is on it’s way ‘down’ in Global Power and Global Influence.  It must takes it’s predetermined position, with the rest of the countries of the world, as a country to be dictated by the “Man of Lawlessness” {as Described in Matthew 24:15,16, Daniel 9:27, and 2 Thessalonians 2:3,4}.

And even if the United States IS “Babylon the Great“, as read in Revelation 18, I would like to remind the Church, that we, the Church, will NOT be around to see the destruction of this “Babylon the Great“.  For we see that “Babylon” is judged near the end time of God’s Wrath being poured out upon the earth {God’s Wrath starts being poured out in Revelation 6}.  The Church  must also remember that we are NOT appointed to Wrath {1 Thessalonians 1:10, 5:9, and Romans 5:9} even as Christ Himself stated that He would keep THE CHURCH FROM the hour of testing that is to come upon the entire earth {Revelation 3:10}.

“God’s people”, therefore, mentioned in Revelation 18:4, are the Jews who were saved, born-again, and sealed with the Holy Spirit in the midst of God’s Wrath being poured upon the Earth {Revelation 7:1-8} along with whoever else will repent during those days.

Remember how Paul taught us that the Jews are to be saved AFTER the “full number of the Gentiles has come in” {or been saved} “and then all Israel will be saved“.  {Romans 11:26}.  The full number of Gentiles, determined by God, will have been saved, then raptured to escape the Wrath of God {again, as shown in Romans 5:9 and 1 Thess 1:10, 5:9 and Rev 3:10} and THEN the End Time Wrath of God will begin.

As we read the headlines in the World today, we can see the stage being set for the End.

But do not let YOUR heart be troubled or afraid!

“For God did NOT appoint us {the Church} to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ” {1 Thess 5:9}

So LOOK UP, Church!
Your redemption draws even closer!

Hallelujah!

China and Brazil should ditch the US dollar in their bilateral trading and replace it with their own currencies, said Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva Wednesday.

In a half-hour interview before leaving Beijing for Turkey, Silva also urged both countries to be “cautious” to make their trade relations balanced.

“I believe it’s extremely important that we should not rely and be dependent on the (US) dollar only to make our financial transactions,” Silva said.

In his meeting with President Hu Jintao on Tuesday, Silva said he told his Chinese counterpart that both countries’ governors of the central banks and finance ministers should meet within the year to “start a conversation” on the issue.

“China has its own currency; Brazil has its own currency. We will regulate this new trade practice,” Silva said.

In September, Brazil and Argentina signed an agreement under which importers and exporters in both countries may make and receive payments in local currency, although they may also continue to use the US dollar if they prefer.

The move was an attempt to reduce transaction costs by eliminating fees on currency exchange.

Silva said Brazil wanted to extend the arrangement to all South American countries.

But Shi Lei, an analyst in Beijing at the nation’s largest foreign-currency exchange, said: “it may take a couple of years for China and Brazil to really start using the yuan in trades because the currency is of limited use outside China.”

“We should first start yuan settlement with Hong Kong and build an offshore yuan center to expand channels for yuan use,” Shi was quoted as saying by Bloomberg news.

China is seeking to promote the yuan as an international currency after signing 650 billion yuan ($95 billion) in agreements with Argentina, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Belarus in recent months.

Jose Augusto de Castro, vice-president of the Brazilian Foreign Trade Association, said businessmen may have issues if they are paid in yuan because they would have to convert them to dollars and pay banks expensive fees.

Silva said any issues that need to be thrashed out are technical ones, not political ones.

“I believe we will have success in this new undertaking”, he added.

The Brazilian president began his second state-visit to China on Monday since he took over the presidency in 2003.

China on Tuesday agreed to lend $10 billion to Brazil’s state-owned oil giant in exchange for guaranteed oil supply from the South American country for the coming decade.

In addition to selling resources and raw material to Beijing, Silva said both countries “have to be cautious” about the trade balance problem.

Beijing for the first time outplaced Washington as Brasilia’s top trading partner in April. But some 70 percent of Brazilian exports to China are primary goods such as soy and iron ore while 60 percent of Brazilian exports to the US are manufactured products, according to the Reuters.

In an interview, Brazilian Foreign Trade Secretary Welber Barral said: “We have to diversify what we export to China, we have to diversify beyond China and we have to add value to our exports.”

While acknowledging the “divergence”, Silva said both countries had exploited only 10 percent of their potential in trade because their diplomatic relations were established only 35 years ago.

“We still need to build a lot of houses. We still need buy more cars, fridges, TV-sets,” Silva said, adding both countries have a lot to sell.

As I mentioned previously, the Book of Daniel and Revelation tell about a great power arising from the EAST and coming against the great city of Jerusalem.

Below is another news article showing China’s rise in world power, which shows the stage being SET for the “End of this Age“.

.

Revelation 16 –

1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s WRATH on the earth.”  … 12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up to prepare the way for the KINGS FROM THE EAST. 13 Then I saw three evil spirits that looked like frogs; they came out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet. 14 They are spirits of demons performing miraculous signs, and they go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty. 15 “Behold, I come like a thief! Blessed is he who stays awake and keeps his clothes with him, so that he may not go naked and be shamefully exposed.” 16 Then they gathered the kings together to the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.

Daniel 8 –
8
The goat became very great, but at the height of his power his large horn was broken off, and in its place four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven. 9 Out of one of them came another horn, which started small but grew in power to the south and to the EAST and toward the Beautiful Land. 10 It grew until it reached the host of the heavens, and it threw some of the starry host down to the earth and trampled on them. 11 It set itself up to be as great as the Prince of the host; it took away the daily sacrifice from him, and the place of his sanctuary was brought low. 12 Because of rebellion, the host of the saints and the daily sacrifice were given over to it. It prospered in everything it did, and truth was thrown to the ground. 13 Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to him, “How long will it take for the vision to be fulfilled–the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, the rebellion that causes desolation, and the surrender of the sanctuary and of the host that will be trampled underfoot?” 14 He said to me, “It will take 2,300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated.”

Daniel 11 – 40 “At the time of the end the king of the South will engage him in battle, and the king of the North will storm out against him with chariots and cavalry and a great fleet of ships. He will invade many countries and sweep through them like a flood. 41 He will also invade the Beautiful Land. Many countries will fall, but Edom, Moab and the leaders of Ammon will be delivered from his hand. 42 He will extend his power over many countries; Egypt will not escape. 43 He will gain control of the treasures of gold and silver and all the riches of Egypt, with the Libyans and Nubians in submission. 44 But reports from the EAST and the north will alarm him, and he will set out in a great rage to destroy and annihilate many. 45 He will pitch his royal tents between the seas at the beautiful holy mountain. Yet he will come to his end, and no one will help him.

China overtakes the US as Brazil’s largest trading partner

By Malcolm Moore in Shanghai
Published: 6:28PM BST 09 May 2009

Welber Barral, the Brazilian trade minister, said total trade between Brazil and China had amounted to $3.2bn (£2.14bn) in April, representing a near twelve-fold increase since 2001.

The sum was greater than the $2.8 billion of imports and exports to the US and represented the second consecutive month that China had topped the trade table.

“It is a historic moment,” he said, adding that he expected China to remain in pole position for the rest of the year because its economy is still growing healthily. “China is now a platinum account [for Brazil],” said Douglas Smith, a Latin American economist for Standard Chartered bank.

The US has been Brazil’s principal trading partner for nearly 80 years, but a sudden surge in Chinese demand for Brazilian iron ore in the first quarter of this year dislodged the Americans.

The news is the latest sign of China’s increasing challenge to US hegemony in Latin America. China has been steadily increasing its sphere of influence and has become particularly close to the four “Red” South American countries: Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru.

China is already Chile’s primary trading partner.

In February, China’s vice president, Xi Jinping, and its vice prime minister, Hui Liangyu, both travelled through South America to cement ties. They visited nine countries, including Brazil and Mexico,

Venezuela, Ecuador and even Colombia, a staunch US ally. The month before, China contributed $350m to the Inter-American Development Bank.

However, despite much fanfare, China has not signed a bilateral trade agreement with Mercosur, the Latin American free trade bloc. Critics also point out that much of China’s foreign investment in Latin America is funnelled directly into offshore tax havens in the Cayman Islands and Bermuda.

Brazil said it now aimed to diversify its range of products to China. Currently the bulk of Brazilian exports is made up of soya beans, for Chinese tofu, iron ore, cellulose and fuel. President Lula is expected to ink further oil and gas deals when he arrives in Beijing for talks on May 18.

“This is a very pressing issue to watch,” said Mr Smith. “Brazil is seeking investment from many sources, including China, to help fund exploration from the Santos Basin, which will be very expensive to extract”.

Alaska’s Kodiak Island is being slammed by a swarm of earthquakes, one with a magnitude of 5.9.

Paul Caruso, a geophysicist at the National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo., says the southeast region of the island was hit Saturday by 15 earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.6 or greater.

The quakes are centered southeast of Old Harbor, but there have been no reports that they’ve been felt.

The earthquakes follow two light quakes that struck the same area less than an hour apart Friday.

One of Friday’s quakes was felt in Old Harbor.

Caruso says the area is seismically active because the Pacific and North American plates intersect along the island and neighboring Aleutian Islands chain.
