The Teachings of the Jehovah’s Witnesses
The Teachings of The Holy Bible
WHO IS JESUS CHRIST?
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that JESUS is:
1 — A “Mighty Spirit Man”
2 — A “Created Being”
3 — An “Inferior God”
The Jehovah’s Witnesses version of the Bible has John 1:1 reading “the Word was with God, and the Word was A god”. -- capitalization of the word “A” is mine for emphasis.
They use a lower “g” to show that Jesus Christ was a created, “inferior god”.
4 — And they teach that Jesus Christ was “Michael the Archangel” (http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/1995/11/1/article_02.htm and seen in “Reasoning from the Scriptures”,
a manual used by Jehovah’s Witnesses for door-to-door evangelization, page 218)
So, Which is He?
The Jehovah’s Witnesses seem to be confused as to who or what Jesus Christ is, but the Bible clearly shows Jesus Christ was God in the flesh.
Lets see some Scriptures that support this statement:
– in John 8:58 “Jesus said … Before Abraham was, I AM”
This was the name God used for Himself when talking to Moses (Exodus 3:14) and this is why the Jews wanted Jesus dead … because He made Himself equal with God. Jesus repeated this name for Himself in John 8:24 when He said “if you do not believe that I AM you will die in your sins” and in John 18:5-6 “Jesus said ‘I AM’ … Now when He said to them ‘I AM’, they drew back and fell to the ground”
– Matthew 1:22-23 says “a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, GOD with us”
– Isaiah 9:6 says “For unto us a child is born … and his name shall be called … The MIGHTY GOD, The EVERLASTING FATHER …”.
This Scripture clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is not only God but also equal with the Everlasting Father.
– Acts 20:27-28 says “… feed the church of GOD, which HE hath purchased with HIS OWN BLOOD”.
This Scripture is teaching that GOD Himself saves people with His own blood. When you compare this Scripture to other Scriptures which teach that it is Jesus Christ who died on the cross and saves people with His blood, you will see that this verse clearly teaches that Jesus Christ is fully God.
— John 5:1-18 says “…the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he … was making himself EQUAL WITH GOD”
The Jews understood exactly that Jesus Christ was calling Himself God and this is why they sought to have Him killed.
– in John 20:28 Thomas proclaimed “My Lord and my God”.
The Jews had always been taught that there is only ONE God, and so for Thomas to call Jesus his “God” AND for Jesus to NOT correct Thomas proves this is another Biblical passage teaching that the Apostles knew and accepted that Jesus Christ was fully God in the flesh. If Jesus Christ was not God in the flesh, then being a “good Jewish boy” He should have corrected Thomas here and stated, “Don’t worship Me, Thomas. You know full well that there is only one God”. But Jesus did NOT say this to Thomas, thus allowing every person present to understand that Jesus Christ was GOD IN THE FLESH.
– 1 Timothy 3:16 says “God was manifest in the flesh”
– Colossians 2:9 says “For in (Christ) dwelleth all the fullness of the GODHEAD bodily”
– Philippians 2:5-7 says “Christ Jesus: Who, being in VERY NATURE GOD …”
– Romans 9:5 says “…from them (the Jews) is traced the human ancestry of Christ, WHO IS GOD OVER ALL, FOREVER PRAISED! Amen” (NIV)
– in John 10:30 Jesus said, “I and My Father are one”
— Colossians 1:14-15 says “we have redemption through his blood … Who is the image of the invisible God ”
— John 5:23 says “…all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father”
–Hebrews 1:3 says “…His SON … Who being the brightness of His glory, and the EXPRESS IMAGE of His person…”
–Zechariah 12:10 Jehovah said ” … and they shall look upon Me whom THEY HAVE PIERCED …”.
This is God (Jehovah) speaking to the prophet Zechariah in the Old Testament, before Jesus Christ was born. Who does the New Testament reveal was actually pierced? It was Jesus Christ (John 19:37), crucified on the cross. In this one Scripture alone, we see the God of the Old Testament telling His people that His name is Jesus Christ, Who will be pierced.
And What About
Does the Bible teach such a thing?
Jehovah’s Witnesses are going to great length to evangelize their doctrine that there is no Trinity mentioned in the Bible (“Should You Believe In The Trinity?, ©1989 Watch Tower) but lets see what the Bible has to say about a Trinity:
– Acts 20:28 says “Take heed therefore unto yourselves … over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers to feed the church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood”.
Three truths are revealed in this one Scripture:
1-We are shown that the Holy Spirit is an actual Person and called the Apostles to their position over the church, which therefore shows us that the Holy Spirit is alive and is a Person of the Godhead and able to speak to people and lead people;
2- that GOD was the One Who bought the church with His own blood;
3- and we know from numerous other Scriptures that it was JESUS Who shed His blood to save people from their sins, therefore this Scripture teaches that Jesus Christ is God.
– Romans 8:11 says “If the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you …”
— John 2:19 says “Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up”
— and Acts 13:30 says “God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead”
These three Scriptures together show that ALL THREE PERSONS of the Godhead, the entire TRINITY, had a part in raising Jesus Christ from the dead: God the Holy Spirit, God the Father, and God the Son.
The Holy Spirit is also shown in Scripture to equally be the Spirit of the Father AND of the Son, as seen in the next Scripture:
– Romans 8:9 says “But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His.”
Notice how the Spirit is spoken also in the next Scriptures to be both the Spirit of the Father AND of the Son.
— 1 Peter 1:11 says “Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify…”
– Galatians 4:6 says “And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts…”
– Romans 8:14 says “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”
As some have pointed out, it is true that there is no word “TRINITY” used anywhere in the Bible, however, there are Scriptures which state that there is actually a “GODHEAD” and there are Scriptures showing a plurality in the name “GOD”, which reveals that God is made up of more than just one single Person, as seen in the Scriptures below:
– Acts 17:29 says “Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the GODHEAD is like unto gold …”
— Colossians 2:9 says “For in him (Jesus) dwelleth all the fullness of the GODHEAD bodily”
– Romans 1:20 says “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and GODHEAD…”
– Genesis 1:26-27 says “Let US make man in OUR image”
– Genesis 11:7-8 says “Let US go down, and there confuse their language … So the LORD scattered them ”
– and Isaiah 6:8 says “I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for US?”
WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT ?
The Jehovah’s Witnesses believe the “Holy Spirit” (or “Holy Ghost” which is the Old English word used in the King James Version of the Bible), is simply a force like electricity (see http://www.watchtower.org/library/ti/article_07.htm) or a force like the wind (a statement made by more than one Jehovah’s Witnesses I have talked to).
But the Bible actually teaches that the Holy Spirit is a Person with a personality and feelings and the Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is God, as shown in the below noted Scriptures:
— Acts 5:3-5 says “Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the HOLY GHOST … thou hast not lied unto men, but UNTO GOD”.
This is a very clear Scripture showing that the Holy Spirit is God and NOT a force like the wind or electricity.
— Matthew 12:31-32 says “All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven … whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him”.
Here Jesus teaches that the Holy Spirit is a part of the Godhead (Trinity), and that speaking against the Holy Spirit brings damnation.
– Acts 20:28 says “… the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers to feed the church of God”.
The Holy Ghost is not seen as an energy or a “force” here, but a Person Who has shown the Apostles what to do for the church.
— Ephesians 4:30 says “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit”.
Here the Holy Spirit is shown to have emotions, such as grieving or sorrow, which an honest person will admit cannot be felt by a force like electricity or the wind.
— 1 Corinthians 2:13 says “… which the Holy Ghost teacheth”.
The Holy Spirit is shown here to be a Teacher and therefore a Person.
– Hebrews 3:7 says “Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice …”
Acts 28:25 says “Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our father saying …”
These two Scriptures show the Holy Spirit as a Communicator, Who SPEAKS to His people.
the following provides a few dates when the Jehovah’s Witnesses re-wrote some
Scriptures to try to dismiss the Deity of Christ

Much trouble was to front the Watchtower Society over the following years as they met opposition from different quarters over the bias in their translation. In support of their New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures, they had quoted Professor Julias Mantey and, as is the case with many Watchtower quotations (see our articles Lies & Deceptions), they had distorted what he had said to make it appear as though he supported their views. As a result, Professor Mantey wrote to the Watchtower Society, requesting that they desist from using his works in such an erroneous manner.
The Watchtower also quoted Johannes Greber in support of their rendering of John 1:1. According to their book Make Sure of All Things (1965 p.489),
‘In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god . . . Based on the oldest manuscripts (a translation from German into English; 1937), by Johannes Greber.’
However, in a ‘Questions from Readers’ item in The Watchtower of April 1 1983 (p.31), the publishers made it appear that they had recently realised that Greber had relied on the ‘Spiritworld’ in arriving at his translation and hence, ‘The Watchtower [had] deemed it improper to make use of a translation that has such a close rapport with spiritism.’ The truth of the matter is however, that the Watchtower Society knew that Greber was a spiritist as far back as 1956 (see The Watchtower Feb 15, 1956 p.110).
Says Johannes Greber in the introduction of his translation of The New Testament, copyrighted in 1937: “I myself was a Catholic priest, and until I was forty-eight years old had never as much as believed in the possibility of communicating with the world of God’s spirits. The day came, however, when I involuntarily took my first step toward such communication, and experienced things that shook me to the depths of my soul.
In 1961, the five individual O.T. volumes were combined into a single volume and subsequently revised in 1970, 1971 and 1984. As David Reed notes in his book Jehovah’s Witness Literature, the only revision of major doctrinal significance was the change, made in 1971, at Hebrews 1:6 where the rendering was changed from ‘let all God’s angels worship him’ to, ‘let all God’s angels do obeisance to him’. (From 1879 through 1953 the Watchtower Society taught that Jesus should be worshipped. In 1954 the teaching was reversed, but the Bible verse was not altered to agree until the revision of 1971).
This is the history of the New World Translation, a Bible version acclaimed by the Watchtower as the only true translation available today because, according to them, it alone upholds the name Jehovah throughout the Old and the New Testaments. However, a close examination of the text exposes that they have not only added the name Jehovah to the New Testament, where there is no evidence in the Greek manuscripts for its inclusion, but the text itself has been radically changed in many instances – with words being added or taken away or different words being used to distort the meaning of the text to suit their own teachings – particularly with regard to the deity of Jesus. In this article, we will examine some of these altered texts by comparing the New World Translation (NWT) with the King James Version (KJV) and, since we will not be able to deal with all of the changes to the text, we will provide the titles of a number of books, which will assist both Christians and ex-Witnesses who wish to pursue this subject further.
If you are a Jehovah’s Witness and this Article has inspired you to search the Scriptures more closely to see if the Watchtower’s teachings regarding Who Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are, please feel free to contact me for more Scriptures.
